Inter-Library Loan (ILL) Requests

This guide provides information about the Gateway Library's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service for Gateway students, faculty, and staff.

About Inter-Library Loans

The library provides many resources to help you through the research process and assist you in finding various kinds of information and provide a better understanding the library.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service is provided to Gateway faculty, staff and students via the Kentucky Virtual Library and the Kenton County Public Library. As a Gateway student, faculty or staff member, you may request to borrow items Gateway doesn't own. Library staff will locate the item and work with you to obtain it. Please note, libraries do not loan textbooks.

Before submitting an interlibrary loan request, first search all Gateway databases and the Kenton County Public Library Catalog, to see whether it is available through either location.

Inter-Library Loan Policies and Procedures

  1. You must be Gateway faculty, staff or current student to request an interlibrary loan.
  2. Submit only one item per request.
  3. Only three requests may be made by an individual within a five day period.
  4. Before you submit the request print a copy for your records.
  5. We do not fill textbook requests. If you need a textbook for your course, please contact the Gateway Bookstore.
  6. Most requests will arrive in 7-10 days. If a request cannot be filled, you will be notified.
  7. All material must be picked up at the Information Commons Desk of your choosing. For distance learning students, items may be sent to the closest local library in the college’s service region or to the nearest campus.
    1. If you are requesting a copy of a journal or magazine article, you will be emailed the copy via the email address provided on the ILL form.
  8. Please return your ILL item to any Information Commons Desk by the due date to avoid any impact on future borrowing requests.
  9. For students needing a laptop, you can request one from the Gateway IT Department Help Desk at this link.

Please refer to the Interlibrary Loan Acknowledgement Form for more information about borrower's responsibilities.

Federal Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

Notice: Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
